EDUC 5591 - Learning How to Learn

1 Credit Hours

Prerequisites: The content will be easier to navigate with classroom experience, but it is not mandatory to have such experience to take this workshop. However, it might be a bit challenging without such prior background knowledge, but the workshop is set up so that everyone can view each other’s creations and work together to design learning resources. This aspect alone will help learners grow their work to higher levels as the course progresses.

In order to enhance student learning, participants in this workshop will collect and reflect upon data (Standard 4; Standards for Professional Learning), in order to design relevant and rigorous learning experiences (Standard 1; KEPPS), for all students, in an educational environment that promotes self-motivation and positive social interactions (Standard 3; KEPPS). Participants will engage in research/reflection/collaborative activities for the benefit of positive long-term change in the academic setting (Standard 6; Standards for Professional Learning). The focus of the workshop will be on neuropsychology (as presented by Dr. Barbara Oakley), understanding growth mindset vs. a fixed mindset (as presented by Dr. Carol Dweck), a deeper look into the various learning styles and learning theories, as well as the influential foundational and behavioral psychologists in the field of education. The goal of the workshop is to not only understand one’s personal mindset, on a deeper level but to also determine the mindset of those students entrusted into their specific care, so that one can begin designing learning experiences to transition those with a “fixed mindset” to that of a “growth mindset” so that continuous improvement evolves, through a collective learning environment effort, where both personal and shared goals align for the sake of the whole (Standard 1; Standards for Professional Learning).
