International Business B.S.


 

Candidates for a degree in International Business must complete the Common Professional Core (CPC) and General Education/Bachelor of Science requirements specified by the Division of Business and Information Technology.  In addition, candidates for a degree in International Business must meet all major requirements.

A grade of “C” or better must be earned in each Division required course applied to the major or minor.

EMPLOYMENT

The International Business major is designed to help students prepare for a career in an organization that does business both domestically and in one or more countries abroad.  Graduates in the major will be exposed to the fundamental principles of business within the richer context of the global, cross-cultural perspective.  Examples of potential employers include multi-national companies, non-governmental organizations, and other not-for-profits.

Any country or region-specific HIST course meeting the CBASE General Education World Culture requirement. Waiver of the General Education World Culture does not waive this requirement.

Domestic Student:

          Student whose native country is the United States may choose a study abroad option (either semester long or May-term/short term) to complete an INBS 493 course that is either located abroad or focuses on international commerce.

International Student:

          Students whose native country is not the United States must take POLS 100 and either HIST 150 or SOSC 210 in lieu of an international option.  NOTE; One will meet the General Education requirement.  The second will meet the International Business requirement.

Foreign Language Requirement: 0-14 hours


To complete the International Business degree, a student must either demonstrate 2nd year proficiency in two languages - one of which must be English.  For students whose native language is English this is met by completing one of the three foreign language options outlined in the “Language Proficiency Worksheet.”  For students whose native tongue is something other than English, this is met by completing the English language option outlined in the “Language Proficiency Worksheet.”

To complete the International Business degree, a student must demonstrate 2nd year proficiency in two languages - one of which must be English.  Students coming to Friends university from a U.S. high school are considered to be English speaking.  Students coming to Friends University from a country other than the U.S. are considered to be English speaking if their high school was conducted in English (i.e. an International High School accredited in the United States).  If their high school was conducted in a different language, they are considered to be a speaker of that language.

 

  • ENGLISH SPEAKING STUDENTS

    For English speaking students, the language proficiency will be met by completing either the Basic Certificate in a foreign language, the Intermediate Certificate in a foreign language, or a minor in a foreign language.  Currently, Friends University offers the certificates and minor in Spanish.  Others languages may be obtained in consultation with the Division of Religion and Humanities.  The requirements are as follows:

     

    A. Basic Certificate in Spanish

              Student has passed 4-6 semesters of high school Spanish or has taken beginning Spanish (SPAN 101 & SPAN 102) at Friends University (or equivalent) with a grade of C or better.

  • Total - 14 credit hours

         Students completing the Basic Certificate can take two more courses (SPAN 310 and SPAN 480) for 6 credit hours and earn the Minor.

    B. Intermediate Certificate in Spanish

              Student has passed 8-10 semesters of high school Spanish or has taken beginning Spanish (SPAN 101 & SPAN 102) and one semester of Intermediate Spanish (SPAN 201) at Friends University (for the equivalent) with a grade of C or better.  In this option, student may choose more advanced coursework in writing (SPAN 310) or in developing advanced conversational skills (SPAN 480).

    NON-ENGLISH SPEAKING STUDENTS

    For students determined to be Non-English speaking, the language proficiency will be met by completing the following four courses from the Friends University General Education curriculum:

    SPAL 351 Latin America Today or SPAL 353 Mayan History and Culture is highly recommended for meeting the second World Culture “country-specific history course” requirement of the International Business major.
