Mechanical Engineering B.S.

Mechanical engineering is one of the most general of the engineering fields. Mechanical engineers design, analyze and oversee the production of many products ranging from airplanes to medical devices.  For example, mechanical engineers design machines that produce power, such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines, as well as machines that use power, such as refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.  They also design systems used in production environments, such as robots, conveyor systems and automated transfer stations.  Mechanical engineers are frequently responsible for the integration of sensors, controllers, and machinery in an array of applications.  A baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering enables a graduate to enter the work force as a practicing engineer or continue their education as a graduate student in an engineering related field.

Employment

Mechanical engineers work mostly in engineering services, research and development, and manufacturing.  They can work on components and equipment for many industries including healthcare, power, transportation and municipalities.  Mechanical engineers research, design, develop, build, and test mechanical, fluid and thermal sensors and devices, including tools, engines, and machines.  They perform engineering duties in planning and designing tools, engines, machines, and other mechanically functioning equipment.  They can also oversee installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment such as centralized heat, gas, water, and steam systems.
