The Art Education program at Friends University prepares students to teach in grades PreK-12. This four-year program includes an internship in both the elementary and secondary levels during the senior year. Graduates are conditionally licensed to teach by the State of Kansas after successfully completing the degree and passing the Principles of Learning and Teaching exam (PLT), a content test, and the Kansas Professional Teaching Portfolio (KPTP). This degree is designed by art educators to fully instruct students in the latest and best techniques of teaching art. Students will have the opportunity to attend the many art programs and museums in Wichita which will enhance their education experience.
All students applying for an art education degree must choose a media of preference and focus on that media for their senior exhibition. All students applying for graduation must participate in the senior exhibit.
In addition to general education components, professional education course components are required.
Prospective secondary teachers should secure a “teaching major” in the subject field of concentration. These “teaching majors” are not necessarily the same as usual major field concentrations. Therefore, it is imperative for the student to follow the particular patterns outlined on Program Outline Sheets available in the Academic Catalog or from the Chair of the Division of Education. Included is a listing of the secondary education degrees offered at Friends University and their teaching major field requirements. Please see the Education Department for complete program outlines.
A grade of “C” or better must be earned in each Fine Art or Education Division required course applied to the major or minor.
All Education students must meet the following Division of Education academic standard:
- Achieve and maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 3.0. Cumulative GPA includes all post-secondary coursework, as well as dual-credit high school courses.
- Achieve and maintain a Professional Education GPA of 2.75 with no grade lower than a C in a professional education course.
- Achieve and maintain a 2.75 GPA in content area courses for secondary and K-12 majors. A 2.75 GPA in major filed courses and supporting requirements is needed for elementary majors.
