The Music Education program at Friends University prepares students to teach music in grades PreK-12, general music, vocal or instrumental. The degree has been designed by music educators to develop teachers with the latest skills and techniques of teaching music.
All Education students must meet the following Division of Education academic standard:
- Admission to the Teacher Education Program requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 overall with no less than 2.75 Content GPA and Professional Education GPA and ACT or 18 or higher;
or
- GPA 2.75 (Cumulative, Content, and Professional Education) with ACT of 24 or higher
Exceptions may petition the Division Chair who will report to the PEB any exceptions or conditions.
Admissions in the Teacher Education Program (TEP) is required for all EDUC 300/400 level methods courses, 300/400 ELED methods courses, and 300/400 level MUSC methods courses. Written notification of the TEP application results will be distributed from the Chair of the Division of Education to all applicants and their academic advisor.
Piano Proficiency: Piano Proficiency must be passed before student teaching.
Employment
Beyond teaching in urban, suburban, private/parochial or rural schools, some students go on to graduate school, music ministry or music therapy.
