A student whose needs are not met by other major programs may develop an individualized major in Liberal Studies.
|
Major Requirements:
- A student contemplating this alternative should work out a proposal in consultation with his/her faculty advisor. One additional faculty member should be consulted, forming an informal review committee, after which the proposal is submitted to the Dean of the College for final approval.
- The declaration of the Liberal Studies major should be completed at least two semesters before graduation, summer not counting as a semester. The Dean of the College may approve exceptions to the two semester policy.
- Transfer students declaring a Liberal Studies major must meet all Friends University residency requirements at the time the degree is awarded.
- All traditional students must have at least 60 credit hours from a 4-year college to earn a degree at Friends University. A maximum of 64 credit hours may be transferred to Friends University from a 2-year college.
- The major shall have a core component of courses. This core shall contain no fewer than 30 semester hours beyond those taken to fulfill the general education requirements.
- At least 30 semester credit hours of the major must consist of 200/300/400-level courses. Courses counted toward the major must be passed with an earned grade of ‘C’ or better.
- Because of the independent nature of the major, the student must have achieved at least a 2.0 overall grade point average, with a minimum of 45 semester hours, before the proposal can be approved.
- The major must include at least six (6) semester hours in each of two different course prefixes beyond those in which the fulfillment of the general education requirements are earned.
- Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree must complete 8 semester hours in a single foreign language at the beginning level.
- Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree must complete 6 additional semester hours in Math and/or Science beyond the hours required in the math and science general education categories.
Total Major Requirements: 71-73 credit hours
Total General Education Requirements: 51- 53 credit hours
Total Degree Requirements: 124 credit hours
