Key to Course Numbers

Courses numbered 001 - 099 represent remedial work and carry no credit toward a degree or credential.  Generally these courses are developmental, remedial, or pre-college in content.

Courses numbered 100 to 299 are designed for freshmen and sophomores but are available to other students.

Courses numbered 301 to 499 are designed primarily for juniors and seniors but are available to qualified sophomores and freshmen if all prerequisites have been met.

Coursed numbered exactly 300EX designate CBASE experimental courses.  Such courses are not listed in the Catalog since they arise out of special needs and are offered a limited number of times.  The subject area will indicate the discipline to which this experimental course pertains.

Courses numbered exactly 400EX designate CAPS experimental courses. Such courses are not listed in the Catalog since they arise out of special needs and are offered a limited number of times. The subject area will indicate the discipline to which this experimental course pertains (ACCT, BMGT, MGMT, etc).

Courses numbered exactly 600EX designate graduate experimental courses.  Such courses are not listed in the Catalog since they arise out of special needs and are offered a limited number of times.  The subject area will indicate the discipline to which this experimental course pertains (ACCT, BSAD, MIS, etc.).

Courses numbered 500 to 699 are designate graduate-level offerings. Such courses are open to undergraduates by special arrangements only.

  • EDUC 4070 - Instructional Strategies that Work Across All Disciplines


    Credit Hours: 2

     

    Have you ever wondered why the “things” you do in your classroom work (or don’t work)?  In this workshop teachers will explore interactive and engaging activities to insure success in the classroom.  These activities are researched based instructional strategies and will be shared in a “hands-on” manner with classroom examples.  After completion of this workshop teachers will be able to use a variety of appropriate instructional strategies and resources to encourage their learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in relevant ways.  This workshop is appropriate for Pre-K-12 teachers and their curriculum content.



  
  • EDUC 4977 - Essential Keys for Influential Teaching


    Credit Hours: 2

    Had enough?  Not sure you can teach another year?  Frustrated with the current trends in education?  This workshop will revive your teaching by focusing on research-based keys to powerful teaching along with strategies that need to be in every teacher’s toolbox.  Through original songs, workshop discussions, practical assignments, helpful tips and lots of fun, teachers will rediscover their passion and purpose as an educator all with the focus on improving student achievement.  Your time in this workshop may just be the turning point in your career.   Expect to laugh, vent, think and be challenged.

  • EDUC 5190 - Take Your Class on a Virtual Field Trip


    Credit Hours: 1

    Designed for the elementary, middle, and high school teachers, participants will learn the effective components of a virtual field trip and prepare one that they can use immediately in their own classroom. A virtual tour is not a virtual field trip. A virtual field trip includes mini lessons for preparation, connections to the Common Core Standards, sites that are connected to the lesson objectives, and follow-up activities. Monetary restraints do not have to limit your class’s ability to visit places in the world. Take your class there virtually with purpose.

  
  • EDUC 5223 - Literacy Intervention Specialist: Advanced


    Credit Hours: 3

    Prerequisites: Literacy Intervention Specialist Introductory Course, 2 Introductory Level Workshops, and 3-5 observations. 

    Introduce second year therapists in training to the advanced portion of the Alphabetic Phonics curriculum and therapeutic program.  This course provides the next level of professional teacher development extending from developing basic skills to sophisticated levels of linguistic knowledge such as advanced syllable division, advanced spelling patterns, vocabulary, morphology, and syntax.

  
  • EDUC 5226 - Literacy Intervention Specialist: Intro


    Credit Hours: 3

    This two-year graduate training program begins with the two-week introductory course and is recognized by the Academic Language Therapy Association to certify Academic Language Therapists. It will introduce the participant to the theory, instructional practices and development of secondary language, structure, history, curriculum and terminology of the Alphabetic Phonics language curriculum. This course is a balanced approach for teaching literacy skills to children who need a structural, sequential, systematic, multisensory approach, allowing children to be successful readers, spellers and writers. The content includes the integration of phonological awareness, letter recognition, decoding, comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, fluency practice, grammar, and written composition skills. 

  
  • EDUC 5415 - Classroom Management and Discipline Strategies that Work!

    Do you need some new techniques to enhance classroom management and discipline in your classroom? Join us for practical research-based strategies you too can incorporate to make a positive difference. Attendees will learn practical hands-on approaches for starting the school year effectively, organizing classroom and materials, rules and procedures, analyzing teacher/student roles and relationships, reinforcing appropriate behavior, and dealing with difficult students. This workshop allows reflective learning as attendees work their way through training modules and a learner’s guide. Projects made will be usable in your own classroom.   • EDUC 5443 - Educator Effectiveness Using Technology Support

    Students are growing up in a world of emerging technology that is ever-present in their lives . Research shows that integrating technology in the classroom improves understanding and increases collaboration among students . But do we, as educators, understand how to effectively incorporate this now termed “new discipline” into our current teaching practice? Effective incorporation of the use of technology provides connectivity, motivation, opportunities, greater developed teaching content, and excitement! As educators, it is a responsibility that we impart an education which includes technology as a means to prepare our students for success. Join us as we explore and evaluate technology and apps that can be used to individualize instruction, allow for student collaboration, and better manage classroom behavior. Participants will analyze introduced programs; gaining skills on technology management and incorporation into teaching practices for student achievement.

  
  • EDUC 5460 - The Grammar Case


    Credit Hours: 0 - .5 variable

    This workshop introduces parents, teachers or other professionals to a multisensory approach to teaching the basic elements of English grammar to children in grades 2-12 . This one-day instructional workshop (6 hours of classroom contact time) introduces and reinforces the eight basic parts of speech utilizing a color coding system and strategies that promote mulstisensory teaching techniques and activities. This workshop includes an introduction to basic sentence ad paragraph structure, transitioning into expanded sentence and paragraph structure.

Experience some proverbial tech cross fit with this mix of high level application, integration, and editing techniques that will transform you into a well-prepared educator. Take action and become the new-improved educator using Google tools, allowing all students to join in on the power of engagement, self-management, and creativity.

    A G-mail account is required. Additionally, having access to a Google Classroom Account will be beneficial, but not essential.
  
  • EDUC 5647 - Communicate with Comedy Using Your Computer


    Credit Hours: 2

    You are probably already using technology to teach some of the high-level, more complex concepts in your classroom, but what about adding humor to the mix? Turns out our funny bone is connected to our sense of wonder. When you include humor in technology projects, you will not only be increasing the joy and enhancing your classroom environment, you will be improving your learner outcomes. Humor activates the brain’s dopamine reward system and studies show that dopamine is important for both goal-oriented motivation and long-term memory. This is why we can use computers to communicate through comedy as an effective intervention to improve retention in students from kindergarten through college. In this workshop you will learn how to create several projects using technology that incorporate this strategy.

    Every teacher has experienced the disappointment of delivering an amazing lesson only to find that the students did not retain any of the information. Why does this happen and how can it be avoided? This workshop is designed to answer those exact questions while utilizing the book Stop Talking Start Influencing by Jared Cooney Horvath. Teachers will understand the science behind learning and how to make their message stick using the 12 core concepts of how people think, learn and remember. This book offers simple, immediately applicable strategies to use in the classroom and increase student learning.

  
  • EDUC 5651 - Structured Literacy Practicum Experience


    Credit Hours: 2

    The practicum experience allows instructors to apply the teaching methods that they have learned during either the Take Flight Courses or Literacy Intervention Specialist Courses. Instructors will teach the appropriate lesson of acquired skill one hour a day with an individual student or small group of children.

  • EDUC 5655 - Critical Content and Processes in Elementary Mathematics


    Credit Hours: 2

    Participants will make connections with math teaching practices and the standards for mathematical practices, considering and analyzing student tasks to deepen understanding of targeted grade level standards. Participants will also apply understanding of weekly content by practicing solving tasks and problems related to the standards

  
  • EDUC 5656 - Improve Student Achievement with Grit


    Credit Hours: 1

    This book focused workshop is designed to help teachers succeed as individuals as well as impact student achievement by focusing on a blend of passion and persistence called GRIT. Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth explains that GRIT is the quality in people that makes them ultimately successful despite challenges and obstacles. People with GRIT do not give up, they keep going, driven by passion and perseverance. Teachers will implement Duckworth’s tools and methods to explore GRIT within themselves and work to foster GRIT in their students. Students face increasing challenges today and the development of GRIT in our students will lead to greater success inside and outside of the classroom. Teachers will improve educator effectiveness through the development of activities and plans to help students grow as learners, persevere through challenges, and be actively engaged in their own learning.
