Key to Course Numbers

Courses numbered 001 - 099 represent remedial work and carry no credit toward a degree or credential.  Generally these courses are developmental, remedial, or pre-college in content.

Courses numbered 100 to 299 are designed for freshmen and sophomores but are available to other students.

Courses numbered 301 to 499 are designed primarily for juniors and seniors but are available to qualified sophomores and freshmen if all prerequisites have been met.

  • MUSC 243 - Choral Pedagogy


    Credit Hours: 1

    Focus on the application of vocal technique in the school choral ensemble, relationship between conducting gesture and choral sound, and rehearsal structure for optimal learning. This course is the second class in a two-part sequence (Vocal Pedagogy 1 and Vocal Pedagogy 2 or Choral Pedagogy).

  
  • MUSC 250 - Marching Band Techniques


    Credit Hours: 1

    The spectrum of marching band styles will be reviewed. Students will study the organization of marching bands. Much time will be given to writing halftime and competition shows, using both traditional and computerized charting techniques.

    The study of technology associated with music both in an educational and professional setting. Course includes lecture on current topics in music technology and hands-on instruction in technologies such as computers and sound systems.

    This course will survey the development of jazz from its inception in the early twentieth-century to the contemporary, with a study of the significant artists, literature, and recordings in each sub-genre.

    Students will survey standard choral music with special emphasis given to literature suitable for elementary and secondary school choral ensembles.

  
  • MUSC 310 - Diction for the Singer 1


    Credit Hours: 1

    Introduction of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), its symbols and related sounds. An overview of the spelling rules governing the pronunciation of the Latin, Italian and German languages. Students will prepare and perform vocal literature in the languages studied.

    A survey of the performance literature from Pre-Bach to the present that is appropriate for specific percussion, string and wind instruments, including techniques, musicianship and stylistic aspects of interpretation.

    Credit Hours: 3

    Prerequisites: MUSC 202 and MUSC 204

    Survey of the language of Jazz improvisation: scales, harmony, forms, styles, chord/scale relationships, analysis, and basic keyboard harmony.

  
  • MUSC 317 - Form, Analysis and Counterpoint


    Credit Hours: 2

    Review of motive, phrase, binary, ternary and new study of rondo, variation, sonata-allegro forms, polyphonic devices and forms. Study of contrapuntal techniques by written works in 18th century counterpoint. Analysis of larger forms.

  
  • MUSC 320 - Diction for the Singer 2


    Credit Hours: 1

    Prerequisites: MUSC 310.

    Continuation of the IPA fundamentals presented in Diction 1. The initial emphasis will be the pronunciation and spelling rules of French and English with the same performance requirement as Diction 1. The second area of concentration will be a review and comparative study of all five languages.

    A Study of the philosophical and practical dimensions of the leadership of music in worship. Attention will be placed upon the relationship of theology and practice, planning the corporate worship experience, and the administrative aspects of music ministry.

  
  • MUSC 336 - History of Music in Worship


    Credit Hours: 3

    A study of history and literature of the church’s corporate song from the early church to the present day. Attention will be placed upon the diverse historic, cultural and stylistic bodies of congregational song and their role in formation and expression of faith.

  
  • MUSC 340 - Literature of the School Band and Orchestra


    Credit Hours: 1

    Students will survey the standard band and orchestra music with special emphasis given to literature suitable for elementary and secondary school ensembles. This course will also be used to expose students to more advanced standard literature of wind and string ensembles.

    Prerequisites: MUSC 260.

    An introduction to the recording studio presenting how sound is created, how acoustics affect sound, live sound equipment function, operation and selection, and basics of recording.

  
  • MUSC 350 - Musical Theatre Survey


    Credit Hours: 3

    Prerequisites: sophomore standing or consent of instructor.

    This course presents a general survey, history and analysis of that great American phenomenon - the musical comedy, musical play, or simply, the musical - from “The Black Crook” through vaudeville to the present. The role of such dramatic/musical works in our culture has been evident and pervasive. The course will focus on the accomplishments, purposes and styles of the makers of this art form: the composers and lyricists, the performers, and the directors and choreographers.

  • MUSC 355 - Advanced Recording and Production


    Credit Hours: 3

    Prerequisites: MUSC 345.

    More advanced knowledge of recording equipment, how to set up a recording studio, how to record and mix in multiple track using the computer.

  
  • MUSC 364 - Orchestration and Arranging


    Credit Hours: 1

    Prerequisites: MUSC 101  and MUSC 102  

    A comprehensive study of orchestrating and arranging music for wind, percussion, and orchestral instruments, as well as voices.

    Prerequisites: Music Education Majors & Admission to Teacher Education, EDUC 310 with C or better.

    Organization and administration of music in elementary grades, methods and materials used in teaching music in relation to the children’s growth needs and interests, and their natural methods of learning.

  
  • MUSC 380 - Advanced Elementary School Music Techniques


    Credit Hours: 2

    This course will be a continuation of the study of specific elementary music techniques that are introduced in Elementary Music Methods (Ed). Specific attention will be given to the Orff and Kodaly methodologies.

    A survey of non-western music along with a study of the musical developments in Western Europe and the Americas from 1950 to the present.

  • MUSC 420 - Jazz Pedagogy/Literature


    Credit Hours: 3

    This course will utilize a ‘hands on” approach to equip students with the knowledge and ability to both teach jazz in a variety of settings, and perform jazz in professional settings. They will learn rehearsal and teaching techniques and have the opportunities to advance their performing careers. Internships will be planned and arranged on an individual basis with the instructor.

  
  • MUSC 421 - Jazz Arranging


    Credit Hours: 2

    Prerequisites: MUSC 202 and MUSC 204

    This course will teach the student how to arrange music for standard big band and other standard jazz ensembles through understanding of harmony, melodic structure, form, texture, reharmonization, and instrumentation.

  
  • MUSC 440 - The Elementary School Internship


    Credit Hours: 5

    Prerequisites: Admission to the professional semester and MUSC 375 .

    Co-requisites: EDUC 490 EDUC 499  and MUSC 450  
    Students preparing for elementary and secondary teaching in music education enroll in MUSC 440 and MUSC 450, with one-half term devoted to each, with supervision by cooperating teachers and college supervisors.

  • MUSC 445 - Secondary Music Teaching Methods


    Credit Hours: 4

    Prerequisites: EDUC 310 and Admission to teacher education.

    Includes a cluster of outcomes to prepare students for secondary music teaching, i.e., history, philosophy and psychology of music learning; planning and delivery of classroom instruction; music program organization and management; national and state standards; curricular and assessment design; teaching materials; and professional and activity organizations and music student events.

  
  • MUSC 450 - The Secondary School Internship

    Senior Seminar is a capstone course required for all students graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree or a Bachelor of Music in Performance degree.     Prerequisites: Junior Status

    Faculty-supervised, practical experience in music-related fields such as applied music teaching, performance, music ministry, arts administration and music business. In the case of internships with individual organizations, the curriculum will be set by agreement between the Division of Fine Arts chair, the faculty supervisor, and the sponsoring organization.  In the case of internships consisting of music performance in the community, the curriculum will be set by agreement between the Division of Fine Arts Chair, and the faculty supervisor.  This is an elective course available to students graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree or a Bachelor of Music in Performance degree.  Learning will be evaluated by the faculty supervisor, based upon submitted record of work accomplished, organization’s supervisor assessment, and reflective journal.

    Credit Hours: 1 - 2 variable

    Prerequisites: Minimal amount of keyboard skill.

    Students learn a variety of techniques relating to composition ranging from development of original ideas to arranging original works and works of other composers. This course is offered as individual weekly lessons and a weekly master class for all students enrolled.

  • FORS 101 - Introduction to Forensic Science

    This course provides the beginning student with an overview of the forensic sciences, including exposure to the rules of evidence, evidence collection and handling, expert witness testimony and an introduction to the various sub-disciplines that fall under the umbrella of the forensic sciences, including pathology, toxicology, DNA testing, firearms, and trace evidence.

  
  • FORS 490 - Forensic Science Seminar

    Prerequisites: Senior standing; Majors or minors in Forensic Science only

    This course is the capstone course for the Forensic Science degree, open only to seniors majoring or minoring in Forensic Science. The course will focus on real cases, with actual transcripts of trial testimony. The students will analyze the testimony, become familiar with the aspects of the cases and will participate in mock trials as expert witnesses.

  
  • NATS 100 - Human Biology with Lab

    This introductory biology course is a laboratory class employing the scientific method for investigation in the area of Human Biology.     This course is a lecture/laboratory class which employs the scientific method in the study of the chemistry of everyday life. Topics covered will include general overviews of inorganic, organic, medicinal and biochemistry, as well as a discussion of energy and the environment. This course includes a laboratory component and is intended for students wishing to fulfill their General Education science requirement, as well as being a required course for some majors. This course will not fulfill any of the requirements for a degree in chemistry.

  • NATS 150 - Natural Science Lab


    Credit Hours: 1

    This course will allow the exploration of natural science concepts in a laboratory setting.  The process of science will be emphasized as well as the scientific method.  If a student transfers in a science course without a lab component, the NATS 150 - Natural Science Lab 1 credit hour course can fulfill the lab science general education requirement.  This course will act as a laboratory component companion for a three credit hour non-laboratory transfer course only.

  
  • NATS 220 - Principles of Anatomy and Physiology & Lab

    This course is designed specifically for non-biology majors and will survey the organ systems of the human body. Emphasis will be placed on the functions of the different organs and organ systems, how the different systems function to maintain homeostasis, and how all the systems function synergistically to create a healthy individual.     This course focuses on the management and improvement of processes across the business or organization. It encompasses the identification and prioritization of strategic business issues and prepares students to charter, launch and manage projects to resolve these business issues and improve business or organizational results. The course provides the student with the principles, methodology, and tools to be successful process improvement practitioners at the Six Sigma Green Belt level. With the completion of this stand-alone class, a Green Belt certification will be achieved. This course will be an elective in the Supply Chain Management concentration.

    The purpose of this practicum is to allow the student to apply the theoretical foundations of the professional preparation program to an intramural or athletic setting. The student will have the opportunity to work with traditional fall sports. The course can be repeated for credit.
