HUMA 490 - Diversity and Inclusion Seminar

3 Credit Hours

Prerequisites: Students enrolled in this course should have already taken or be in the process of completing 15 hours of coursework pertaining to the diversity minor. These credit hours must include four of the 3-credit courses listed under General Education Goal 5: Culture and Diversity. Currently, this general education area is interdisciplinary, including choices of 16 distinct courses from 18 different prefixes and 4 academic divisions. Because the Diversity Studies minor is designed to be an interdisciplinary program, there are two additional parameters set on the choice of the four courses. First, students can use no more than 2 courses with the same prefix toward the Diversity Studies minor. Second, students must take courses with at least three unique prefixes to satisfy the diversity studies minor.

This course is the culminating experience for students enrolled in the Diversity and Inclusion minor. The course involves weekly meetings to discuss readings, media, and current events related to diversity and inclusion. During the course, students will develop a personal diversity mission statement. In addition, students are required to complete 12.5 hours of service in a cultural context other than their own; service experiences must occur on a monthly basis throughout the semester. Students are also required to complete a culminating project related to diversity and inclusion and present it in a forum that is open to the university community.
