Spanish Credit For Proficiency
For previous foreign language coursework, students can receive ungraded retroactive credit hours as described below:
- Four ungraded retroactive credit hours: Students who enter at the beginning Spanish II level (SPAN 102) at Friends University receive 4 hours of ungraded credit for SPAN 101 (Beginning Spanish I) if they pass SPAN 102 with “B” or better.
- Eight ungraded retroactive credit hours: Students who enter at the intermediate level (SPAN 201) at Friends University receive 8 hours of ungraded credit for the beginning level (SPAN 101 & SPAN 102) courses if they pass SPAN 201 with “B” or better.
- Twelve ungraded retroactive credit hours: Students who enter at the intermediate 2 level (SPAN 202) at Friends University receive 12 hours of ungraded credit for beginning level (SPAN 101 & 102) and intermediate 1 level (SPAN 201) courses if they pass SPAN 202 with a “B” or better.
- Sixteen ungraded retroactive credit hours: Students who enter at the advanced level (300/400 courses) receive 16 hours of ungraded credit for beginning (SPAN 101, 102) and intermediate (SPAN 201, 202) courses if they pass three advanced Spanish courses at Friends University of 3-credit hours each at the 300-400 level with a “B” or better.
- CLEP Spanish Examination: CLEP exam may be taken for graded credit hours in foreign language classes. It may be taken only once. See CLEP Subject Examinations.
- Proficiency in Speaking: Placement and possible waiver: Students will be given an oral proficiency exam to determine the correct placement in Intermediate or Advanced Conversational classes(SPAN 305, SPAN 306, or SPAN 471). The oral proficiency assessment will be administered by an outside evaluator. For placement, the exam may be taken only one time. The Spanish Department will inform the Registrar’s Office by email of the successful results of the placement and will request a waiver of any appropriate course(s) that may be skipped (SPAN 305, SPAN 306, SPAN 471). Students will complete the course in which they are placed.
- Granting of retroactive, non-graded course credit: When the placement course is completed with a grade of “A” or “B”, the Spanish Department will inform the Registrar’s Office by email of the successful completion of the said course and request the appropriate retroactive credits for SPAN 305, SPAN 306, and/or SPAN 471. This credit will be recorded with a “CR” grade.
- Non-granting of retroactive, non-graded course credit: If the grade of the placement course is below a “B”, the student will not receive retroactive credit. The student will substitute the required hours that are waived with other Spanish courses (SPAN or SPAL) of their choosing.

- For beginning courses in other modern foreign languages (i.e., French, Italian, German), the same policy for retroactive credit applies for beginning II.
Opportunities for Study and Travel Abroad
Students are encouraged to spend a month, semester, or year outside the United States for an enriching experience in living, studying, and traveling abroad. Opportunities are currently offered in Cuba, Spain, Ecuador, and Mexico. Other options are available.
Sister Cities Exchange Program
Friends University became a sister university of La Salle University of Cancun, Mexico, Friday, March 26, 1993. In the signed agreement, both institutions promised to promote and establish academic and scientific exchanges for students and faculty. Since then, the institutions have enjoyed successful academic exchanges of students from both campuses.
