General Education Requirement: Traditional Undergraduates

Students who successfully complete the general education core will demonstrate:

  1. The ability to read, write and speak appropriately and effectively;
  2. The ability to use mathematical concepts to solve problems;
  3. The ability to explain at least part of the natural world through scientific processes;
  4. The ability to use computers and understand developing technology in contemporary society;
  5. An understanding of the arts and humanities as fields of study that contribute to our growth both individually and corporately;
  6. An understanding of Christian faith in the context of contemporary existence;
  7. An understanding of the geography, politics, beliefs and customs of the United States and at least one culture outside the United States;
  8. An understanding of the major concepts of the behavioral and social sciences; and
  9. Competency in basic research related skills.

To achieve these goals the student is required to take:

FOUNDATIONS courses to provide groundwork upon which a liberal arts education builds.

PERSPECTIVE courses to give students an integrated introduction to the range of academic concerns and modes of inquiry.

COMPETENCY courses to assure competency in basic skills.

GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR BACHELOR OF ARTS AND SCIENCE DEGREES


Foundations (14 credit hours)


Perspectives (18 credit hours)


Competency (12 credit hours)


Speech/Interpersonal Communications (Choose One, 3 credit hours)


Mathematics (Choose One, 3 credit hours)


Writing (6 credit hours)


Additional Degree Requirements


Bachelor of Science - Students must have an additional 6 hours of science and/or math.

Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, and Bachelor or Music - Students must have 8 additional hours in a single foreign language.  See Traditional Undergraduates: College Academic Policies section under Requirements for Baccalaureate.

Total General Education Credit Hours Required For B.A. & B.S. Degrees = 48-54

GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR BACHELOR OF MUSIC AND BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS DEGREES:


Foundations

         Foundations of World Civilization - 3 credit hours

         Foundations of American Character - 3 credit hours

         Foundations of Faith - 3 credit hours

         Friends Experience - 1 credit hour

Perspectives

         Literature - 3 credit hours

         Religion & Philosophy - 3 credit hours

         Social & Behavioral Science - 3 credit hours

         Natural Science - 4 credit hours

Competency

          COMP 201 (with a final grade of C or better) - 3 credit hours

          COMP 202 (with a final grade of C or better) - 3 credit hours

          COMP 110 & COMP 111 = COMP 201 (with a final grade of C or better)

          Mathematics - 3 credit hours

Language: Requirements will be defined by the particular program.

Total = 40 credit hours
